Māia Lockyer University Of Otago

Justine (Kāi Tahu) and Māia (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Porou, Rongomaiwahine) are Māori researchers based at the Dunedin School of Medicine at the University of Otago – where Justine is the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor Māori of Health Sciences and Māia is a fourth year Medical Student. Justine has an extensive background in Māori Health Research and Māia has recently begun her journey in the same field. Both are deeply passionate about facilitating health equity through research, and one of the places that has been identified to have the highest need for health equity efforts is in the Emergency Department. This instigated “Te Ara ki te Haumanu” – an equity pathway designed to reframe the ED as a site of powerlessness to a site of cultural strength, and support Māori clinicians into Emergency Medicine.
