ACEM Clinical Trial Network Workshop

Overview

Facilitators: Kim Bruce and James Furness

Step out of the lecture theatre and into the water for a practical, full-day workshop exploring emergency care in coastal and aquatic environments. Delivered by a multidisciplinary team from Gold Coast HealthBond UniversitySurfing Medicine International (SMI), and OceanSense, the day includes interactive lectures, pool-based free diving/ breath-hold activities, and surf rescue simulations at Nobby’s Beach. 

Topics include: 

  • Drowning resuscitation 
  • Haemorrhage control in surfing 
  • Case studies from the World Surf League 
  • Marine-related trauma
  • History of freediving
  • Mammalian Dive Reflex
  • Breathing activity
  • Freediving pool activity
  • Surf rescue activity

Participants will also receive access to SMI’s E-Basic Surf Life Support (E-BSLS) online learning package to complete prior to the event. 

Warning 

This is an active, water-based workshop. Participants must be prepared to take part in both pool and surf-based activities. Appropriate swimwear, sun protection, and physical fitness are required. Participation is at your own responsibility, and a signed medical waiver is mandatory

ACEM Procedural Skills: 

  • S1 – Airway – Basic Life Support – Adult 
  • S2 – Airway – Basic Life Support – Child 
  • S79 – Trauma – Application of arterial tourniquet use
